How Are Our Pens Made?
Acrylics
Our acrylic pens are made with high quality materials sourced in the U.S.A. Most of our acrylic pens are made from a polyester resin that is custom formulated with unique and unusual patterns.
Woods
Our wood blanks are sourced from various parts of the world, making each one unique.
Acacia, African Mahogany, Black & White Ebony (when available), Bocote, Goncalo Alves, Honduras Rosewood, Indian Ebony (when available), Jatoba, Lacewood, Leopardwood, Lignum Vitae, Padauk, Purpleheart, and Zebrawood are some of our most popular varieties.
Turning Blocks of Wood Into Pen Barrels
Once you select the desired wood or acrylic, it is cut into the sizes needed for the upper and lower sections of the pen, and is then hand turned on a lathe to it's desired shape. Once turned, the blanks are then sanded with progressively finer grits to ensure a smooth finish. We then polish the blanks with a special wax to protect the surface. The pen is then assembled with a pen kit that matches the material type.
Turning these squared wood or acrylic blanks takes patience, sharp tools, and a strong nose. Some woods when turning can smell quite unique.
